Male Red-Rumped Parrot Here we have the much more colourful male Red-rumped parrot, partner of the more drab female, as pictured in the previous post. These are wild and free parrots - , another Australian native parrot. A small number of these birds live around the sports playing fields of La Trobe University in suburban Melbourne. Here, it is sitting on the wire boundary fence of the Baseball diamond, which is one of the very few places with a lush green grass, during the terrible 12 year drought in South East Australia. This is a wild and free red-rumped parrot – a species that I have only ever seen around the precincts of the University. Normally I only see them on my lunchtime walks, around the distant sports fields. These birds, being ground feeders are very vulnerable to attack, and therefore are very wary and skittish – and this is a rare moment for me to get a reasonable photo – mainly due to having a 600 mm film equivalent lens! Scientific name: Psephotus haematonotus Family: Psittacidae Order: Psittaciformes Red-rumped Parrots are medium-sized, slender parrots. The adult male is bright green, with a blue-green head, a red rump, and yellow shoulders and belly. The female is a duller, olive-green, with a green rump and faint yellow or light green scales on the belly. Young birds of both sexes are duller in colour. The Red-rumped Parrot is found in south-eastern Australia, throughout most of New South Wales (less so on the coast) and Victoria, with an isolated population in north-eastern South Australia and south-western Queensland. The Red-rumped Parrot feeds in pairs or small flocks on the ground, preferring seeds and leaves of grasses. It also will feed on seeds, fruits and flowers in trees. Often seen feeding in suburban parks around Melbourne. They will feed with other parrots, including Eastern Rosellas and Galahs.
